Water Management

Initially focused on optimizing irrigation, ACMG is also working to improve knowledge and tools around water-related risks and to think of innovative solutions to make this hazard a useful resource.

The ACMG develops:

  • Methods of observing water-related impacts via satellite imagery with, for example, flood zoning as part of the ClimAlert project.

  • Measurement sensors (water level, water quality).

Once the hazard has been identified, the objective is to limit its impacts while making the resource useful, both in terms of quantity and quality.

ACMG offers solutions such as:

  • The storage of water in the water table (example: SISENAS projet) which makes it possible to limit floods and erosion phenomena thanks to infiltration and to have water available in summer.

  • The storage of water in new generation lakes that provide quality water in quantity.

  • Improving soil retention capacities with biochar, plant cover, hedges.

Ideas and principles: the amounts of rain are variable but sufficient to adapt to global warming provided that the surface runoff is slowed down.

It is necessary to take advantage of the local conditions of the soils, basements and reliefs in order to be able to have water in summer, during periods of low water, to maintain or even increase the active surfaces in photosynthesis both in the city and in the countryside.

SISENAS project

Ancre 2

The drought of 1990 led to a severe drying out of the wells in the alluvial plain of the Garonne from the beginning of July. Faced with this observation, the ACMG, with the support of the Water Agency, the DDA 47, the Chamber of Agriculture of the 47 and the BRGM, carried out from 1993 to 1996 an experiment of recharging of tablecloth in the municipality of Passage d'Agen. It was found that 50% of the volume injected into the water table was available three months later and that the rest, excellent quality water, went directly to the Garonne during the low-flow period.

This principle was taken up with ENSEGID and the Water & Climate Cluster in 2014 with a first application in the industrial area of Boé-Bon Encontre. Arrangements such as valleys and wells make it possible to recharge the water table with quality water in winter and during intense rainy episodes and to use this water in summer to irrigate the trees and cool the space. This experience helped reduce heat islands within the area.

Since 2019, with the financial support of SMEAG, ENSEGID has continued this work with the ambition of
applying it on a large scale to the areas on the left bank of the Garonne so as to reinforce, during low-water periods, natural inputs. sources fed by the water table along the banks while maintaining the operation of the many wells of the lower plain located between the Canal and the Garonne.

New generation lakes

Ancre 3

The ACMG participates in the development of new generation lakes which allow the storage and release of quality water within the watersheds thanks to a water settling basin upstream of the storage space.
